California Marriage Equality in Danger

The purveyors of lies, intolerance and inequality have done it. From Equality California:

They claim they did the unconscionable.

Extremist anti-LGBT organizations spent an unprecedented amount of money to pay people to collect signatures and are now saying that they succeeded in buying their way onto the November ballot.

The measure seeks to amend the California Constitution from being a document that protects all people to one that excludes us from equality.

…..

EQCA is a leading partner in the Equality for All Campaign that is made up of leadership from LGBT and allied organizations fighting this dangerous initiative.

We estimate that the opposition spent well over $1.5 million to gather signatures. This means they’re serious about spending millions more to pass the amendment. We need to prepare for what will likely be the most expensive LGBT rights ballot measure in our nation’s history. Here’s what you can do:

* Make a donation to Equality California Issues PAC. We have to match them dollar for dollar. EQCA Issues PAC is committed to fighting this and every attack on our families and our community and every dollar raised will be spent to defeat this measure.
* Tell your friends and family. Tell them why you are giving and ask them to make a donation as well.

In the coming months our community is going to be tested in ways it has not been tested before. So much hangs in the balance.

Granted, Governor Schwarzenegger stated that he is against a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. But we need to fight this hateful initiative tooth and nail nonetheless.

Mercury News Covers Truth Wins Out Protest

Backstory (with photos): Truth Wins Out Trumps Love Won Out

Yes, I’m the “Rogers” quoted here:

Hundreds gather to learn about ‘ex-gay’ movement

By Jessie Mangaliman

A traveling national conference billed as an event “to provide help for those struggling — and those whose loved ones struggle — with unwanted same-sex attractions,” drew about 700 people to a Mountain View church on Saturday.

The gathering at the evangelical Christian church, Abundant Life Christian Fellowship, also drew a small protest by members of the Bay Area’s gay and lesbian community incensed by the conference topic, the longstanding controversy on whether gays can be “converted” — or turned into so-called “ex-gays” through a Christian “step out” program.

It was the first time that Love Won Out, a 10-year-old traveling conference sponsored by Focus on the Family, an evangelical group based in Colorado Springs, Colo., was held in the South Bay.

Inside the church, there were conference sessions on “Understanding Male Homosexuality,” “Hope For Those Who Struggle,” and “Straight Thinking on Gay Marriage.” …

Wayne Besen, executive director of Truth Wins Out, a New York City-based non-profit that tracks the “ex-gay” issue, led the protest of about 25 gay men and lesbians outside the church.

“It’s false advertising,” said Besen, author of a book, “Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth.”

“There’s no one there who’s going to be ex-gay,” he said.

Joyce Rogers stood on the sidewalk holding a hand-lettered sign that said, “Homophobia: Now that’s a choice.” Another sign said, “Science! Not Stereotypes.”

“These poor, deluded people inside are being told an absolute lie,” Rogers said, “that you can pray away the gay. If that’s the case, then you can pray away the straight, too.”

After the hourlong protest, Rogers and others traveled to San Jose to attend a counter-conference at the Billy DeFrank LGBT Center on The Alameda.

“We felt we had to do something,” said Aejaie Sellers, the center’s executive director. “We felt we had to represent our outrage.”

Truth Wins Out Comes to San Jose CA!

We just got notice that there will be a number of events in San Jose to educate people on the dangers of the “Ex-Gay” industry and to protest the Love Won Out symposium. While this is short notice, particularly for the Thursday events, all who can attend are encouraged to do so.

What: TruthWinsOut.org Executive Director Wayne Besen will travel to San Jose this week to help educate people about the dangers of the ex-gay industry. Besen will join a group of local organizations at a press conference on Thursday, in an effort to ensure accurate information reaches the public and those attending the Love Won Out conference. Besen is also the author of “Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth.”

“It’s tragic that most of the people attending Love Won Out are parents who are looking for answers in the wrong place,” said TruthWinsOut.org’s Executive Director Wayne Besen. “We are speaking out to stop these parents from being exploited and we hope to dispel myths and misconceptions so they can learn to love and accept their gay children.”

Where: The Billy DeFrank GLBT Community Center
938 The Alameda
(West of the HP Pavilion Arena, between Race St and Hwy 87)

When: Thursday, April 10
11 AM

Who: Aejaie Sellers, DeFrank Center’s CEO/Executive Director

Bill Roth, Catholic Democrats of California

Gloria Nieto, Santa Clara County LGBT Democrats

Wayne Besen, Executive Director, TruthWinsOut.org

Rev. Michael Ellard, Metropolitan Community Church of San Jose

Saturday Activities: On Saturday, April 12, a prayer vigil will take place at 11 AM, in front of the church hosting Love Won Out - Abundant Life Christian Fellowship, 2440 Leghorn Street, Mountain View. Also on Saturday, the DeFrank Center will host a panel discussion on the ex-gay industry at 1:00pm (938 The Alameda, San Jose). Joining Sellers and Besen will be Rev. Michael Ellard (Metropolitan Community Church of San Jose), Bill Roth (Catholic Democrats of California), Gloria Nieto (Santa Clara County LGBT Democrats) and ex-gay survivors.

Love Won Out is a quarterly ex-gay symposium sponsored by Focus on the Family. John Paulk, an ex-gay leader who was on the cover of Newsweek and appeared on Oprah, 60 Minutes and Good Morning America, originally ran the program. Love Won Out suffered a major setback after Paulk was photographed in a Washington, DC gay bar by Besen.

TruthWinsOut.org is a non-profit organization that counters right wing propaganda, exposes the “ex-gay” myth and educates America about gay life.

We hope to see you there!

California Homophobes Beaten Back! AB2085 and AB2086 Dead!

Read the background on these bills here.

Now, enjoy the wonderful news from Equality California:

Two Bills Threatening Student Safety Die in Committee

EQCA Opposes Measures Designed to Strip Away Student Civil Rights Protections

SACRAMENTO — April 3 — Two bills opposed by Equality California failed in the Assembly Education Committee yesterday, safeguarding existing protections for California students. The measures would have stripped away important civil rights protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students.

Members of the Assembly Education Committee rejected both Assembly Bill 2085 and Assembly Bill 2086 with a 6-3 vote along party lines. Every Republican assemblymember on the committee voted to repeal student protections. The six votes against the bills came from Democrats.

AB 2085 would have deleted existing protections against discrimination in public school instruction based on actual or perceived sexual orientation and perceived gender, disability, nationality, race or ethnicity, and religion. The bill would have voided student safeguards that were secured with EQCA-sponsored legislation. AB 2086 would have discouraged schools from offering diversity programs, such as Coming Out Week and Day of Silence, that discuss sexual orientation and gender identity issues. Both measures were authored by Assemblymember Bob Huff, R-Diamond Bar.

“We are pleased California’s fair-minded legislators opposed these bills today, recognizing the progress we have made to ensure that all people, especially our youth, are treated fairly, equally, and with respect,” said EQCA Executive Director Geoff Kors. “Although we have secured important protections under law for all California youth, anti-gay activists and policy makers continue to attack the civil rights of our young people. We must continue to be vigilant in stopping these attacks in their tracks in order to safeguard the youth protections we have worked long and hard to secure.”

Last week, EQCA issued an action alert to its members and supporters asking them to urge members of the Assembly Education Committee to oppose AB 2085 and AB 2086. Nearly 3,000 letters were sent to the committee.

Testifying in opposition of the bills, Lance Chih, a 20-year-old college student from Sacramento, recalled discrimination he faced in high school because he identifies as gay.

“I remember how afraid I was to go to my school,” Chih said. “I remember sitting in class and being harassed for being gay – and the teacher doing nothing to intervene. The laws that are in place are designed to help make, and keep, school a safe environment. There were a few teachers on my campus that were following the law and were there to protect me. The next student may not be as lucky, especially if we make it OK to tolerate blatant bullying and discrimination.”

In an attempt to erase some of the student civil rights laws that protect LGBT youth in California, anti-gay organizations have filed a lawsuit in state court. The suit attacks the Student Civil Rights Act (SB 777), which reinforced existing state laws that prohibit discrimination in publicly-funded schools and activities based on religion, race or ethnicity, disability, gender and sexual orientation. Opponents of SB 777, authored by Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, are also collecting signatures for a voter initiative to repeal certain student civil rights protections.

Organizations that joined EQCA to oppose AB 2085 included the American Civil Liberties Union, Anti-Defamation League, Asian Americans for Civil Rights and Equality, California State Conference of the NAACP, California Teachers Association, Los Angeles Unified School District, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and California NOW. Groups opposed to AB 2086 included the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, District IX, California Family Health Council, California Federation of Teachers and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California.

Californians: Help LGBT Youth Stay Safe

Email from The Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center:

The DeFrank Center and Equality California need your urgent help to stop two bills in the Legislature that would take protections away from youth.

Anti-gay activists want to strip away safe schools protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth that we have worked long and hard to secure. The latest assault comes next week - when two anti-equality bills come before the Assembly Education Committee.

The DeFrank LGBT Community Center is joining Equality California in urging members of the California State Education Committee to stop these hateful attacks on LGBT students.

Take action now to oppose these two misguided bills.

Stop Assembly Bill 2085 (Huff)
AB 2085 would delete existing civil rights protections against discrimination in public school instruction based on actual or perceived sexual orientation and perceived gender (including gender identity) disability, nationality, race or ethnicity, and religion.

Stop Assembly Bill 2086 (Huff)
This bill would discourage schools from offering diversity programs that discuss sexual orientation and gender identity issues. Programs like Coming Out Week and the Day of Silence, which could be affected by this bill, are critical for fighting intolerance that often leads to harassment and violence against LGBT youth.

All students need and deserve school settings that are free from hate and discrimination. These spiteful bills must be stopped to protect our youth. Take action today.

Thank you for helping the DeFrank LGBT Center and EQCA stop unfair attacks on our equality and our youth. Please forward this to everyone you know and ask them to supprt the equailty and safe of youth in school.

Speaking of Boycotts (And We Were), We Certainly Won’t Be Staying in Any Hyatt or Marriott Hotels, Anywhere

Doug Manchester: This man wants your money, which he uses to keep you from achieving equal rights.
This man wants your money, which he uses to keep you from achieving equal rights.

Developer is foe of same-sex marriage

Developer Doug Manchester and other prominent San Diego County businessmen have given significant financial support to an initiative that would ban same-sex marriage targeted for the November statewide ballot.

Manchester’s $125,000 donation has prompted a gay-rights activist to urge a boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt and the Manchester-owned San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina.

In addition to Manchester, Mission Valley developer Terry Caster has donated $162,500; Robert Hoehn, owner of Hoehn Motors in Carlsbad, has given $25,000; and La Jolla businessman Roger Benson has given $50,000, state records show.

. . .

Donations from San Diego residents make up a significant part of the $1 million raised for the initiative.

That has allowed the campaign to hire professional signature gatherers to help collect the 700,000 signatures needed to qualify the constitutional amendment for the ballot, said Andrew Pugno, an attorney for Protectmarriage.com, which is sponsoring the amendment.

. . .

Keith Gran, a gay-rights activist and global project manager for a medical device company, said he is outraged by Manchester’s donation.

“He’s paying people to add a bigoted, discriminatory amendment to the constitution,” Gran said. “I think that’s appalling. I think people ought to know that.”

. . .

Manchester said his hotels and restaurants welcome gays and lesbians as employees and as customers. “I don’t want to offend anybody,” he said.

. . .

News of Manchester’s contribution has been circulating throughout the gay and lesbian community for several weeks. State Sen. Christine Kehoe, a San Diego Democrat who is a lesbian, said she was disappointed by Manchester.

“I was surprised that Doug Manchester would make such an enormous contribution to try to deny a small group of Californians their civil rights,” Kehoe said.

Gran has contacted officials with the Hyatt Corp., which operates the Manchester Grand Hyatt, to discuss the issue.

Hyatt employees plan to meet next week with the Greater San Diego Business Association, which promotes businesses owned by gays and lesbians. …

Manchester said his hotels and restaurants welcome gays and lesbians as employees and as customers. “I don’t want to offend anybody,” he said.

Translation: “I don’t want to offend anybody who puts money in my pocket — especially homos blissfully unaware of how I use their money against them.”
