Mass. Sen. Ted Kennedy Dies at 77,
After Cancer BattleEdward M. Kennedy, one of the most powerful and influential senators in American history and one of three brothers whose political triumphs and personal tragedies captivated the nation for decades, died at 77.
Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, was the last survivor of a privileged and charismatic family that in the 1960s dominated American politics and attracted worldwide attention. As heir through tragedy to his accomplished older brothers — President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-N.Y.), both of whom were assassinated — Edward Kennedy became the patriarch of his clan and a towering figure in the U.S. Senate to a degree neither of his siblings had been. …

Pretty words don’t do a damned thing. Put your bully pulpit where your mouth is. Until then, it’s just that much more verbal diarrhea:

At least a few more Democratic voters are finally beginning to understand the way we liberals/progressives have felt about Obama since the day he arrived on the scene and started making promises no rational person ever believed he could, or would, keep.
That is all.

Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) has said a few outrageous things in his political career, but this one may take the cake. …“He […] spoke of a ’socialistic elite’ — Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — who might use a pandemic disease or natural disaster as an excuse to declare martial law,” reports The Athens Banner-Herald.
He added, “They’re trying to develop an environment where they can take over. We’ve seen that historically.” …
In November, the Georgia lawmaker told a Rotary Club that President Obama was a “Marxist” and said his suggestion of a “civilian security force” made him eerily like Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. …
If stupid people are going to say stupid things, can’t they at least learn the difference between socialism and Marxism?
Not to mention the fact that Barack Obama is even less a socialist — or a Marxist — than Lucille Ball was a Communist. But to hope for that much to get through the cement skulls of goofballs like Paul Broun would be asking far too much from the Attention-Deficit Sound-Bite Generation.
More of Broun’s lunacy (”death panels” and all) at Raw Story.

These death threats aren’t threats—they’re challenges. They’re attempts to inject into the public debate the sense that violence is a legitimate response to political defeat. As someone in the blogosphere whom we can’t presently recall wrote yesterday, the appropriate response to a president who advocates rounding up the elderly and sending them before death panels is—if it seems like he’s on the cusp of achieving that goal—to kill or rebel against him. And each publicized call for Obama’s death adds to the public perception that we’ve reached a decision-point about whether it’s time for killing. Every sign—even if the bearer is merely an angry loon who could never get close to Obama—is an inducement to someone who is willing to try. It’s a message to fellow travelers, a signal that they are not alone in their rage, a promise of glory to come if they actually manage to get the job done. As we said before, there are always people who want to kill the president. The question is how many give it a shot. And the more of these signs there are in the background of Fox News’ live report from some town hall in Missouri saying that someone should give it a shot, the more people actually will. And the more people that give it a shot, the more likely someone is to hit the jackpot.
Excellent piece at Gawker by John Cook that deserves the full read.

“That is not to say there is no place for a Nazi analogy in this debate. The Nazis rose to power by mastering the art of propaganda, repeating lies so frequently and so widely that eventually people took them as truth. Hence the importance of seeking out the truth, and exposing those who would engage in such deceit.“Freud taught us about projection: Those who would compare Obama to Hitler or his policies to Nazism ought to look in the mirror.”

As shown on Congressional travel disclosure forms obtained through Legistorm.com, a nonprofit dedication to government transparency, in February 2000 a bipartisan pair of US congressional representatives, Frank Wolf (R-VA-10) and former Democratic Ohio Congressional representative Tony P. Hall, traveled with their wives to Hawaii on what the two described as official US government business but the trip was financed by two interconnected fundamentalist ministries, Youth With a Mission and “The Family”, which both advocate Christian theocratic rule.Suggesting they confused the agenda of those ministries with US government interests, representatives Frank R. Wolf and Tony P. Hall, who is now a US ambassador working to foster a Middle East peace initiative, each signed their names to statements on their travel forms…
The stated destination of Tony Hall’s and Frank Wolf’s February 18-25, 2000 conjugal junkets was Kona, Hawaii, home of the international campus and headquarters of Youth With a Mission. YWAM is a global Christian ministry that owns the C Street House and whose founder Loren Cunningham proposes an ambitious plan for Christian domination in which believers achieve control of key societal sectors including government, business, media, and education: the 7 Mountains Mandate.

A year ago, I would have expected a flood of hate mail for posting this, and agreeing with every last word. Today, the Obamanauts tend to leave me alone. I don’t think it’s because they’re tired of me; I think it’s because it’s virtually impossible to disagree with such a searing indictment and maintain even a shred of credibility (although a few are trying, and failing, miserably):

[The Medal of Freedom is] a well deserved award, one too many years in the making. But like everything else done for or to the gay community that is seen as positive, it’s a two-edged sword because honoring someone for their activism and impact on a state or nation while their cause is still unfinished, their people still unequal, is interesting indeed.
How would Harvey Milk have felt, what would he have done, and where would he be, if he’d been alive to receive his medal today?

Quite satisfying, finding this at the Mormon blog Messenger and Advocate:
Not, mind you, that M&A goes to any great lengths to explain why Beck’s accusation that Barack Obama “has a deep seated hatred for white people or white culture” (whatever “white culture” is supposed to be) is “ridiculous”; rather, the real point of the piece is: “[W]hat makes Glenn Beck’s comments more harmful is that he claims he is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Church does not need this type of publicity or association,” especially since the “post Proposition 8 media spin has already harmed the Church’s image painting Mormons who stood for religious principle as propagating hate and intolerance and being on the fringe.”
“Mormons … propagating hate and intolerance and being on the fringe”? Doesn’t sound like “spin” to us.

But when he misses, he misses by a mile.

Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano resigns after arrest in sweeping corruption probe Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano heeded calls for his resignation and finally stepped down Friday, a week after his arrest for taking a $25,000 bribe.
The 32-year-old Cammarano spent 30 days in office before submitting his letter of resignation to the city clerk, his lawyer said. …
He was accused of taking the money in return for his support for a high-rise building project. He initially vowed to stay in office while he fights the charges, but protesters set up camp outside his home and at City Hall demanding he vacate the office.
Cammarano took the oath of office on July 1 after a hotly contested race. City Council President Dawn Zimmer was sworn in as his replacement.

We may be totally grossed out to the max by Hustler magazine, but we’ve always loved Larry Flynt (in a purely platonic way), ever since… well, even before he made Jerry Falwell’s head explode:
In a Daily Beast exclusive, Larry Flynt, the notorious publisher of Hustler magazine, tells the president to toughen up, keep his campaign promises, and start whacking the Republicans.

Dodd Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer U.S. Senator Chris Dodd has been diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, his office said.
The Democratic 65-year-old lawmaker will go through surgery when the Senate is on recess in August, and he expects to be back at work after a “brief recuperation” at home.
“It’s something that’s very common among men my age,” Dodd told the Hartford Courant. “In fact, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point during their life.” …
Common, it is. And while prostate cancer is nothing to be taken lightly, we’ve known a number of men who’ve been through it and come out with a clean bill of health.
Glad to hear they caught it early. But send good vibes anyway.
