U.S. Left in the Dust on Gay Rights Again… By Hungary

No kidding. Adoption is still verboten (or rather, betiltott), but look what gay Hungarians just got, on the federal level — and in a country that is deeply Catholic and dangerously homophobic:

Hungary to allow same-sex domestic partnerships

Hungary’s official government publication says gay couples will be able to register domestic partnerships beginning July 1.

The official bulletin says a new law will allow the partnership if both partners are at least 18 years old. The law will prohibit same-sex couples from adopting children together, but will require partners to provide care for each other’s children from earlier relationships if the children are recognized as belonging to the partnership.

The bill was approved by parliament in April and signed by President Laszlo Solyom earlier this week.

No, it’s not full-fledged marriage — but they won the rights even same-sex couples in states with marriage equality do not; i.e., federal benefits that are only a distant dream to gay and lesbian Americans:

Under the law partners must be over 18, live together and be financially interdependent. It will allow gay and lesbian couples to recognize partners as next of kin, provide for joint tax filing, allow partners to make decisions in health care, and assure inheritance, social security and pension rights.

This is exactly what Obama promised us, wasn’t it? Non-Marriages that gave us the same rights… right?

I guess he forgot to say: “…just not in this life.”
