Meeting Turned Pride March ; Part Deux.
There was one straight white woman who stood up with her white husband by her side, who voted Yes on 8…
“We were tricked. They played on our fears and they lied to us” she said. Then she apologized to the crowd and said she wanted to do whatever she could to help set things right.
After a flash of irritation toward the woman I felt a surge of warm hope. If she saw the light, there may be hope for at least some of the others who voted Yes on that hateful Proposition. I also couldn’t help but admire the bravery she showed in coming to our meeting to face that incredibly large crowd of very frustrated people.
After a bit more discussion we decided to meet again on Monday the 17th. We then spilled onto the street, signs in hand and voices raised, while the News 7 camera caught it all. The group moved from the DeFrank Center to downtown San Jose, ending up in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. Library. Here’s a video one of the participants shot (News 7 footage is not on YouTube as of this writing).
Tomorrow night there will be a candlelight vigil from 5-6:30pm outside the Metropolitan Community Church of San Jose. As Sapphocrat previously mentioned this is directly across the street from one of the Mormon mission centers. However the vigil is strictly a peaceful event. If your desire is to create disruption or engage in any form of attack on others don’t plan on doing it at this event. Period.
If you aren’t in the San Jose area you can join one of the vigils being held in other parts of the county. Visit the Council of Churches Website for more information.
And as a final reminder we have the National Day of Protest next Saturday, November 15th. We need your presence and support so be sure to mark the date!
