B1R = “bONEr”

Tagger damages Orange County’s famed Crystal Cathedral

An unidentified tagger did tens of thousands of dollars of damage to the landmark Crystal Cathedral and its buildings, a church spokesman said Tuesday.

Surveillance video first captured the vandal about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, less than a half hour after a church-hosted community festival ended in the parking lot, said Ben Rhodes, cathedral spokesman.

Church officials later determined that the tagger, who appeared to be in his early 20s, etched the symbol “B1R” into 11 locations on the church and its buildings.

They included the Family Life Center, the base of the cathedral’s glass spire, a granite wall near the cemetery and the arboretum, he said. The marks were made on wood, glass, metal and granite, and repairs will cost at least $38,000, Rhodes said.

. . .

“We don’t have any indication of what his motivation might have been or if it’s connected with anything,” Rhodes said. “We don’t know that.”

Why attack Schuller? Why now? Robert Schuller — annoyingly ignorant as he is — has been so low-key for so long, he’s practically neutered.
