GSA Kids Less Likely to Play Hooky
Secondary schools that have gay-straight alliances may have a lower tolerance rate of homophobic acts, according to a study released Wednesday.
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s study, also found that the students in schools with GSAs are less likely to hear homophobic remarks and slurs in school than students who don’t have that access.
The benefits of GSAs also integrate with classroom performance. LGBT students in schools with GSAs are prone to feel safer, thereby missing fewer classes. Fifty-two percent of students in schools with a GSA said that the faculty, staff and administrators are supportive of LGBT pupils.
Social and population research in the study shows that youth in the South and rural areas are less likely to have access to an LGBT resource in school. African-American students were seen to have the least access to a GSA.
